Doo.Ri must be one of my new favorite designers ever. That's her who was first nominated in 2004 when the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award was established. Doo.Ri Chung lost that year to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. But in 2006 she took away the top prize of $200,000 at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards. I remember watching Douglas Keeve's Seamless that was filmed right after The Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue magazine established an award to help aspiring designers. Reeve focused on four of the ten New York designers as they compete for the first annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which could finance their dreams: Alexandre Plokhov of Cloak; Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler; and Doo Ri Chung of Doo.Ri. And since then i fell in love with Doo.Ri's designs. She is known as a draping queen of NYC right now, and what would i like better than a draping? Just some more draping! But there is one more thing that caught my attention back then: how she was inspired by fashion despite all the difficulties. Working in her parents dry cleaning basement, she was designing, cutting, tailoring, styling... And all on her own. And when there was a fire in a dry cleaning, and some of her collection was lost, she came there the same evening, simply sat at the table and started sewing missing pieces all over again!
